Morning: Take a look around Saddleworth Museum, beside the Huddersfield Narrow Canal. Full of intriguing objects from the past it tells the story of the people who created Saddleworth’s landscape and character. Pop into the shop on your way out for a souvenir of your trip, before enjoying lunch at one of the many great pubs, cafes or restaurants in Uppermill.

Afternoon: Visit Castleshaw and enjoy a guided tour of the Roman Forts with Saddleworth Historical Society. Explore remains dating from around AD 79 and the route of the Roman road across the Pennines from Manchester to York. An area rich in wildlife, a stroll around the two reservoirs may reward you with sightings of geese, herons, dippers, hawks and more.

Alternatively explore the Huddersfield Narrow Canal on foot with the Canal Society’s Towpath Guide, or on a boat trip towards the famous Standedge Tunnel.The Pennine Moonraker runs from outside the museum with a schedule of public trips, and is available for hire for group bookings (day and evening).

Evening: If you’re looking for fun and entertainment in the evening take your seats at The Millgate Arts Centre, Delph or Saddleworth Civic Hall, Uppermill and enjoy a play, concert, dance show, or even a film. Alternatively head over to Oldham Coliseum Theatre for a production packed with creativity, excitement and fun.
