Description

Oldham Coliseum is a building-based producing theatre. It has a capacity in its main auditorium of 585 seats; in addition the theatre has a studio with a capacity of 50 seats. The company produces 8 shows a year on its main stage, offering a balanced programme of drama, comedy, musical, new writing and the annual pantomime. In addition to in-house produced work on the main stage the theatre also takes in 4 weeks of touring theatre as well as around 15 non-theatre performances including music dance and stand up. Coliseum@ an offshoot to the theatre’s building based productions promotes a programme of theatre at three community venues.

The Coliseum Theatre dates back to 1885 and began life as a Grand American Theatre. Situated in the heart of Oldham and surrounded by almost a dozen other theatres, almost 125 years later, the award winning Coliseum is the only surviving thea¬tre in the town.

The 21st century sees the theatre not only continue its success but also expand. The company has a well established and highly respected reputation for its work within the community and provides opportunities for everyone to get involved. The Education and Outreach department provide an innovative and exciting programme of participatory activities to support the artistic vision of the theatre and to serve the diverse communities of Oldham and Greater Manchester.

The development of new and exciting opportunities to get involved in all aspects of the Coliseums work demonstrates the theatres commitment to being more than a theatre. It provides an essential platform for local people to achieve their creative potential, investing in the emergence and progression of new talent whilst also supporting the Coliseums need for continued audience development.

Never afraid to take risks with its shows, the Oldham Coliseum has gained a reputation for presenting sometimes challenging but always entertaining productions for its passionately loyal audience.

The Oldham Coliseum Theatre is a registered charity. Charity number 508829

The Coliseum gratefully acknowledges funding from AGMA, Arts Council England and OMBC.
