Markets and Local Food

Morning: Discover a wonderful variety of stalls on offer at Tommyfield Market. Established in 1830, it is believed to be one of the largest indoor permanent markets in England. With everything from clothing, to fresh local produce, and homemade Caribbean food Tommyfield is the place to shop. Stop at Levers’ famous Fish and Chip shop for a spot of lunch, where a blue plaque commemorates the first chips being fried here in 1860 - the start of a British culinary institution! Or try one of the many fantastic family run cafes the market has to offer.

Afternoon: After lunch enjoy a 20 minute drive to Uppermill through the villages of Austerlands, Scouthead, and Delph.  Stop off on the way to visit Albion Farm Shop, or head straight to Uppermill to explore a selection of local butchers, delicatessens and lovely independent cafes. There’s also a farmers market at Saddleworth Museum on the second Sunday of the month.

Alternatively pre book a guided tour of Greenfield Brewery. Producing 24 beers inspired by Saddleworth and the events that take place in the area, its own supply of Pennine spring water gives this real ale a homely taste. As well as beer, the brewery shop also sells Greenfield Brewery pint glasses and merchandise perfect as a gift.

Evening: Round off a day of culinary delights with dinner at one of Saddleworth’s fantastic restaurants and pubs, many of which serve local produce.
