Uppermill Summer Music Festival 2019 - Uppermill Methodist Church, 82 High St, Uppermill, Oldham OL3 6AX

Sat 13th July 2019 19.45, £12

The 12 ensemble has rapidly developed a reputation as one of the UK’s leading string orchestras, with tours taking them to South Korea, Italy and Iceland. A bold, versatile and virtuosic ensemble, the group is built around a core of twelve of London’s finest and most exhilarating chamber musicians.

Vaughan Williams Fantasia on a theme of Thomas Tallis
Grieg “From Holberg’s Time:” Suite in olden style
Tchaikovsky Serenade for Strings

They bring our 2019 celebrations to a close with the haunting and beautiful Vaughan Williams Fantasia (repeatedly voted into the top four of Classic FM’s Hall of Fame); with Grieg’s affectionate reflection on bygone days; and the ever-popular Tchaikovsky Serenade – his heartfelt tribute to the spirit of Mozart – which overflows with melody, nostalgia and exuberance.

Founded in 2012 by Artistic Directors Eloisa-Fleur Thom (Principal Violin) and Max Ruisi (Principal Cello), the group’s youthful energy and passion for chamber music is at the heart of their music-making. Fearlessly programming bold new works alongside the greats of the string orchestral repertoire, the ensemble strives to bring exceptional music to as diverse an audience as possible.

The group regularly perform at leading venues throughout the UK and Europe, with recent performances at the Barbican, St George’s Bristol, Berlin Philharmonie and Hamburg Elbphilharmonie plus tours to South Korea, Iceland and Italy. In 2018, the ensemble held a 3-day residency at the Barbican for the Sounds & Visions festival and were the recipients of a PRS ‘Resonate’ Award. Their acclaimed UK tour Reborn featured works including Schubert’s Death and the Maiden and John Woolrich’s Ulysses Awakes, performed alongside the ensemble’s new short film based on a commission for solo dancer from award-winning choreographer Alexander Whitley. The tour culminated in a full BBC Radio 3 live concert broadcast from St George’s, Bristol.

The 12 ensemble’s debut album Resurrection, released in September 2018, is a powerful collection of four works for strings that reflect the ensemble’s spirit of bringing new energy and exploration to established sounds and ideas.
