Oldham Coliseum - Hard Times

19 May - 3 June 2017

Hard Times is set in the fictional Northern Coketown. It portrays the decades' long friendship between mill owner Josiah Bounderby and schoolmaster Thomas Gradgrind.

Bounderby dragged himself up from the gutter and is determined to see his family rise to the very top of society whatever the cost. Gradgrind is obsessed with facts, facts, facts, insisting on the superiority of facts over fancy. He's adamant nothing else will be of service to his pupils, including his own daughter.

The glittering prizes and the hardships of the Industrial Revolution are conjured through a rich tapestry of characters including factory hands, a circus impresario and a daring girl bareback horse rider.

Less is definitely more in this fast moving adaptation where a score of memorable personalities are played by an ensemble of just six actors. It's Charles Dickens as you've never seen him before.
